Idaira del Castillo is an artist born in Tenerife, where she currently resides.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of La Laguna and a Master’s Degree in Scenography from the Complutense University of Madrid.
During the course of her university studies, she spent a year at the University of Vigo, where she began her path of plastic research. Portraying the everyday, through drawing, photography, and imagery, to capture day-to-day moments. Like a spectacle of life, a voyeur, making countless drawings and photographs that seek to capture the moment.
Appropriating cardboard, packaging, old magazines, and fabrics that she found during her stay and used as a support for these creations, stories of the characters and the place, from her own imagination in which she was an omniscient narrator.
Her work is developed on formats ranging from murals, performance, installation, painting, drawing, or video. Using various reused materials such as textiles, many coming from clothing or related elements collected from waste, also plastic, cardboard, paper, packaging… In a process that seeks sustainability. Creating with the minimum possible impact on the planet. A premise on which part of her research is currently based, seeking processes and ways of creating in line with this ideology. Talking about topics related to nature, focusing on how we relate to it and to the rest of the living beings that share our home.
In her work we can also see an adaptive component in line with her subtle personality, which is impregnated by the place of creation, which can vary depending on the circumstances. Thus seeking plastic solutions with the available means and those specific to the setting and its context, thereby granting the process something unique each time, of The Journey.
Finally, it must be said that the artist has the need to tell and transmit her emotions, theories, and opinions of what happens in the world. Her fears, her imagination, her language is intermingled with the outside in a healing-process that tames and feeds her monsters. Balancing her psyche, relieving her pain.
