Idaira del Castillo is an artist born in Tenerife, where she currently resides. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of La Laguna and a Master’s degree in Scenography from the Complutense University of Madrid. During her university studies, she spent a year at the University of Vigo, where she began her journey of plastic investigation. She started by portraying everyday life through drawing, photography, and images to capture daily moments. Like a spectacle of life, a voyeur, she created an endless number of drawings and photographs seeking to capture the moment. She appropriated cardboard, containers, old magazines, and fabrics she found during her stay, using them as a medium for her creations. She told stories of the characters and the place from her own imagination, in which she was an omniscient narrator. Her work unfolds across various formats, including murals, performance art, installations, painting, drawing, and video. She uses diverse recycled materials such as textiles, many of them from discarded clothing or related items, as well as plastic, cardboard, paper, and containers. This process is driven by a commitment to sustainability—creating with the lowest possible impact on the planet. This premise is a cornerstone of her current research, as she seeks out creative processes and forms that align with this ideology. Her work often addresses topics related to nature, focusing on our relationship with it and with the other living beings who share our home. In her work, we can also see an adaptive component that is in tune with her subtle personality. Her art absorbs the creative environment, which can change depending on the circumstances. This allows her to find artistic solutions using the materials available and inherent to the setting and its context, making each creative process, or “The Journey,” a unique experience. Finally, the artist feels a need to tell and convey her emotions, theories, and opinions about what is happening in the world. Her fears and her inner world are intertwined with the external world in a healing process that soothes and nourishes her demons, balancing her psyche and alleviating her pain.
