J. Roberto Diago

Havana, 1971

Roberto Diago is one of the most recognized contemporary artists in Cuba. Born in 1971, he trained at the San Alejandro Academy in 1990 and works as Consultant Professor at the Higher Institute of Art, Havana.

The everyday is the material of his work, he makes use of the materials that the day to day offers him and gives them a symbolic charge in an act of cultural resistance. His work reflects his interest in the legacy of African culture brought by slaves to Cuba, and how it is presented in today’s Cuban society.

He has recently had important exhibitions such as his solo at the Lowe Museum in Miami. A regular figure in the best art fairs in the United States and Latin America, he has also shown his work at fairs such as ARCO Madrid or FIAC Paris, as well as at the Venice, Havana and Dakar biennials. He has work in the National Museum of Havana, Deste Foundation in Athens, Brownstone Foundation in Paris, CIFO Collection in Florida, Boston Fine Arts Museum or Jorge M. Pérez Museum in Miami, among many other internationally renowned collections.

Julio Blancas

Gran Canaria, 1967

Julio Blancas was born in 1967 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He studied sculpture at the Plastic Arts Schools of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. His work is made with pencil or graphite on paper, canvas or satellite dishes. He has participated in more than forty group exhibitions and seven solo exhibitions, in the main halls of the Archipelago, with incursions also in Madrid and internationally in centers located in countries such as Belgium and Italy; as well as a working stay with the artist Jiri Dokoupil in Berlin. He has exhibited in galleries in the Canary Islands, Berlin and Milan. His work is part of the collections of the TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, CAAM. Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, Gran Canaria Tenerife, Bruno Bischofberger Collection (Switzerland), Artizar Collection, La Laguna (Tenerife), Government of the Canary Islands, Sabadell Foundation, Colegio de Arquitectos Santa Cruz de Tenerife, etc.
Working almost exclusively with pencil and graphite, on various surfaces, Julio draws and draws from nature as a source of inspiration. His methodology is simple and obstinate: he opacifies surfaces by repeating the essential graphic gesture, the line. A stroke always made with graphite accurately reflects the gradations of light and gives rise to forms that emerge from the opacity, from the totality of black, thanks to an exquisite organization of the surface established so that the reflection and brightness of the external light completes the work.
Blancas works with memory arguments. It simulates natural spaces, but they are mental landscapes, ordered with a strongly structural sense of the result, which responds to an intention and a meaning.

Laura Mesa

Tenerife, 1975

In a historical moment that forces us to redefine our relationship with the real and its representation, my work focuses on a theoretical-formal research that reflects on this need. From different starting points, which address different categorizations about the fiction of the real, I work on the tension generated between both concepts.

For this I use drawing, which I consider the most elemental, austere and, in a way, honest plastic expression. I propose a re-reading of its processes and materials in parallel to a reflection based on Deleuze, Heidegger or Danto, to derive, as a result, in the production of works formally articulated around the density of graphite and India ink. With these theoretical and physical materials I build solid drawings that seek to tension -and question- the reality of the drawing itself and, therefore, the drawing of reality itself.

Carlos Nicanor

Gran Canaria, 1974

He graduated in Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna and began exhibiting his work in 2002. His works have been selected in biennial exhibitions both in Las Palmas and Tenerife, deserving first prizes such as the Excellens of sculpture of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Miguel Arcángel (2011) or the First Prize Manolo Millares CajaCanarias (2009). In 2006 he held his first solo exhibition, which he titled Buscador de nortes, in which under the motto “where everything is done and everything to be done” he would present a collection of veiled tributes to some of the sculptors he admires, Brancusi and Giacometti among others.

Among his exhibitions are Antinatura/Sinbiología (Galería Artizar 2010-2012), and Osmosis. Blancas + Nicanor (TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, 2015), as well as his participation in the XII Havana Biennial within the project Detrás del Muro, with the installation Lemon Way, in which he built a path of yellow wooden tiles that crossed the Malecón to die in the Caribbean, heading to La Florida.

Nicanor is a Brossanian sculptor. It is enough to see some of his latest works to understand that his creativity aspires to give shape to a work that will be a caustic alteration of the object and its meaning, always proposing a new and unusual one, and that such work postulates in many cases a Dadaist position that brings him closer to Arp and Duchamp. Carlos Nicanor’s sculptural intensity is poetic in nature. Perhaps that is why his work seems so comfortable and rigorously expressive when he makes his own the legacy of the avant-garde, especially Dadaism, and its ability to make self-sufficient objects, closed entities with which a cultural key is essential to communicate.

Marco Alom

Tenerife, 1986

Born in Tenerife, he has lived and worked for several years on the island of El Hierro. His work revolves around his obsessions: The Territory in which he lives, The History of Art, The Power of the Icon, Anthropology, and to unravel and understand ultimately what it is that which forms us and what we call Culture. He graduated in Fine Arts from the University of La Laguna in 2011.

He has worked as an illustrator for publishers such as the German Konkurbusch, in projects such as the one carried out with the German artist Horst Hoheissel on Historical Memory (Tenerife, 2008), The Emerging Art Fair of El Charco (Lanzarote), Memories of Smuggling (Tenerife and La Palma, 2014), or The Illustrated Journey (2014) with the Danish illustrator Mads Berg that was exhibited in several European cities such as London, Dublin, Madrid or Milan, or New Island of Utopia (Tenerife, 2015).  He has been selected in the calls: PEJAC for the exhibition Tártaro (Madrid, 2014), or NOW’15 for the ARTIZAR Gallery (Tenerife, 2015). He has also had solo exhibitions Del Amor y Lo Ridículo (Ateneo de La Laguna, Tenerfe, 2010), and Soliloquio (La Regenta, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 2015).
