Galeria Artizar presents an artistic project for the SUR section of Zona Maco featuring works by renowned artists Roberto Diago (Havana, 1971) and Carlos Nicanor (Gran Canaria, 1974). This project, which explores the deep relationship between their works, highlights the importance of the materials used and the connection between Cuba and the Canary Islands as integral parts of the global south.
Roberto Diago, known for his commitment to themes of identity, race, and memory, uses a variety of recycled materials and mixed techniques that reflect the complex social and cultural history of Cuba. His work is characterized by a powerful visual narrative that addresses the scars of colonialism and the struggles for social justice. The textures and layers of his works invite viewers to explore the strata of Cuban history and identity.
On the other hand, Carlos Nicanor is distinguished by his ability to transform industrial and everyday materials into intriguing and conceptual sculptures. His focus on materiality and form creates a dialogue between the organic and the industrial, the natural and the constructed. Nicanor explores the intersection between personal and collective identity, using materials that resonate with the geography and culture of the Canary Islands.
The project that Artizar Gallery will bring to Zona Maco will focus on the convergence of these two artistic approaches, emphasizing the similarities and contrasts in the use of materials and themes. The connection between Cuba and the Canary Islands is manifested in their works as a reflection on diaspora, identity, and the shared memory of the global south. Both regions, marked by their colonial history and their struggle for cultural identity, find in the works of Diago and Nicanor an artistic bridge that unites their narratives.
This project promises to offer Zona Maco visitors an enriching and profound experience, highlighting the relevance of contemporary art in reflecting on global history and identity. Artizar Gallery hopes that this presentation will not only strengthen the presence of these artists on the international stage but also foster a meaningful dialogue on the themes that their works address.
